What if I told you it’s about the journey, not the destination?

Recently, I have found myself thinking that abandoning sugar is the key to finding balance with food. Considering how sugar keeps itself busy messing up the road traffic in our brain, I believe it just makes sense that once you get it out of your way, you will enjoy a cleared highway towards your healthy relationship with food.

Flawless and legit reasoning, right?

What’s more, I have found that staying permanently away from sugar has not been that difficult for me.

So, on paper, the whole process sounds straightforward and should be easy to accomplish for roughly everybody that gives it a chance.

What I was neglecting to see is that my success was not the result of that simple decision plus a little commitment. The reality is that I have spent the last 30 years battling against and with food, so the magic did not happen over a fortnight. These last 30 years have served me as a training circuit where I gradually went from an average diet to an increasingly less refined, and at the same time much happier, eating style.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to discourage you from attempting the sugar-free journey. Quite the opposite, really.

Chances are that if you are reading this, you probably have given other paths a go already. You probably have eliminated fats once, or carbs, you have exercised a lot, you have starved yourself, and you have engaged in many different diets too. You are probably standing now in the place where I also was when I decided to settle things once and for all. If that is your case, with the experience I can share with you, adjusting to a sugar-free lifestyle will come rather effortless. And you will be free.

If you are new to dieting, I want to tell you this. Although I might fall in the trap of using the word diet every now and then, be assured that I never mean to describe a calorie restriction kind of meal plan. I use the word diet simply to describe what you eat, as in your eating style.

So a sugar-free diet is a sugar-free lifestyle, not a calorie restriction regime.

No doubt you will lose weight and your health will improve but that should not be your only focus. You will be surprised but, by the time you will get there, you and your thinking will have changed and you will be enjoying a totally new and relaxed relationship with food. The journey which will have led you there will be revealing and rewarding.

This is why I invite you to approach a healthy eating style not as a restrictive diet but rather as a joyful journey of discovery. A way to go back to the wisdom of your body, trusting it will know how to get you to your destination, pit stops included. Once the road is cleared.
